My car began life as a black and gold JPS Group A race car in 1987. It was the 5th of 6 cars built for the 1987 Australian Touring Car Championship. The JPS team was owned and run by the famous, internationally renowned, Australian racing driver Frank Gardner OAM. Frank built, tested and setup all 6 cars.
It is important to note that the Frank Gardner built JPS cars, beat ALL the european BMW M3s at Bathurst in 1987.
After the Eggenberger Sierra controversy at Bathurst in 1987 Frank Gardner walked away from the Group A team.
In that same year Peter Brock was disowned by Holden for the Polariser affair.
So, by the end of 1987 Peter Brock was without a factory backed drive and BMW without a team of drivers. The fit was obvious and BMW offered Peter the cars. Peter’s other sponsor, Mobil, could still see the value in the gun driver and continued their sponsorship.
